Employment through the Tailoring Schools

Posted by Himalayan Village Education Trust on April 13, 2010

HiVE tailoring schools have slowly been increasing the quantum of work procured for stitching in the tailoring schools at Naddi and Khudgoth villages.
It started with Isha’s friends wanting to get suits stitched… slowly orders started trickling in from Vipassana Centre in Dharamkot village (Dharamsala), then Gail (a friend) wanted gift wrapping for her hand crafted jewellery..
Even the villagers like coming to the centre for getting clothes stitched (even though they have to pay cash) and now ‘Dharti Pukaare’, an organic store near Dharamsala has also given an order for shopping bags to be made by the centres.
All money from these orders are paid to the girls who made the items.. (on the principle of ‘Fair trade’) with only the material cost deducted.
They work in the centre which provides them a way to get together as also to control the quality of what they make… There are times when the girls manage to take more than 1000/- rupees a month for doing part time work and that too sitting in their own village… Not bad for pocket money….
